Highest Composition Dissimilarity among Phytoplankton Communities at Intermediate Environmental Distances across High-Altitude Tropical Lakes

چکیده

Tropical high-altitude lakes are vital freshwater ecosystems for the functioning and dynamics of tropical wetlands called páramos, found at over 3300 m above sea level. They play a major role in hydrogeological cycle provide important hydrological services such as water storage, yet they understudied. Describing patterns processes community composition these is required to better understand consequences their degradation by human activities. In this study we tested geographical environmental components distance–decay relationships phytoplankton structure across 24 from Southern Ecuador. Phytoplankton phyla level showed high among-lake variation Tres Lagunas. We no links, however, between geographic distance composition. On contrary, observed some environmentally related like redox potential, altitude, temperature, total phosphorus. The absence support relationship here can result conjunction local niche-based effects dispersal limitations. Lagunas system or any other ecosystem may be jointly regulated neutral forces that still need explored. Despite not proving mechanistic explanation structure, hope our findings understanding vulnerable ecosystems. More studies urgently required.

Schistosomiasis transmission at high altitude crater lakes in Western Uganda

BACKGROUND Contrary to previous reports which indicated no transmission of schistosomiasis at altitude >1,400 m above sea level in Uganda, in this study it has been established that schistosomiasis transmission can take place at an altitude range of 1487-1682 m above sea level in western Uganda. METHODS An epidemiological survey of intestinal schistosomiasis was carried out in school children...

Limitation of dimethylsulfoniopropionate synthesis at high irradiance in natural phytoplankton communities of the Tropical Atlantic

Predictions of the ocean-atmosphere flux of dimethyl sulfide will be improved by understanding what controls seasonal and regional variations in dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) production. To investigate the influence of high levels of irradiance including ultraviolet radiation (UVR), on DMSP synthesis rates (lDMSP) and inorganic carbon fixation (lPOC) by natural phytoplankton communities, ni...

Patterns in phytoplankton taxonomic composition across temperate lakes of differing nutrient status

We describe the relationships between summer average total phosphorus (TP) and the biomass of six major phytoplankton taxonomic groups from 91 north temperate lakes. Both regression and a locally weighted smoothing (LOWESS) analyses show that all groups increase with TP but over different nutrient ranges. At nutrient extremes, i.e. very low and high levels of TP, the few taxonomic groups that d...

Functional traits explain phytoplankton responses to environmental gradients across lakes of the United States.

Ecological communities exhibit regular shifts in structure along environmental gradients, but it has proved difficult to dissect the mechanisms by which environmental conditions determine the relative success of species. Functional traits may provide a link between environmental drivers and mechanisms of community membership, but this has not been well tested for phytoplankton, which dominate p...

Volume Regulation and Renal Function at High Altitude across Gender

AIMS We investigated changes in volume regulating hormones and renal function at high altitudes and across gender. METHODOLOGY Included in this study were 28 subjects (n = 20 males; n = 8 females. ages: 19 - 65 yrs), who ascended to a height of 3440m (HA1), on the 3rd day and to 5050m (HA2), on the 14th day. Plasma and urinary creatinine and urinary osmolality as well as plasma levels of plas...
